The Eventus Recruitment Group’s Top Tips for achieving work life balance in a 24-7 connected world

Work Life Balance

Achieving a work life balance can be difficult in a 24-7 connected world. Our work and personal lives often become blurred with our use of mobile devices and sometimes it can feel like we never switch off from the office.

Follow The Eventus Recruitment Group’s top tips for carving out some work life balance.

Have one calendar for work life balance

Ensure you don’t miss out on important things in life whether that is a boardroom meeting one day or your child’s sports day the next. We recommend having one calendar which covers all your work and personal appointments. You can then see at a glance what you can and cannot do. If you have things to attend that are not work related, speak to your manager and let them know that flexibility works both ways.

Set your own balance scales

We all have 24 hours in day. It is important to consider how you want to spend your time. What a balanced life looks like will be different for all of us. Decide on your parameters for a work life balance.

Use technology to your advantage

Living in a connected world definitely has its upsides in terms of enabling flexible and remote working for many roles. If you are in a role which allows you to work remotely and flexibly, then work when you are most efficient. If you’re not currently working flexibly, but feel your role can allow it, have a discussion with your manager about what can be possible.

Keep excited about your work

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” Confucius once said. Discovering this kind of love for your career isn’t always easy. If you’re not feeling the passion for the work you do, reflect back on why you took the job in the first place and think of ways to put the excitement back in your work. Talk to your manager about why they recruited you and where your strengths lie. You might be surprised at their answers and find your passion for your role returning. Setting personal goals can give you a sense of achievement and something to constantly strive for. Learning new things about your industry can help to keep things fresh. Lastly, if you feel like you need a little help to make your job work better for you, speak to your manager. Employers would always rather keep talent than lose it.

Work for an employer that understands

We are very lucky at The Eventus Recruitment Group, in that, we have an understanding MD in Siobahn Courtney who understands that work life balance is not just good for staff morale, but good for her business too.
It is important that both employee and employer are honest about what is achievable and feasible in terms of getting the work life balance right. If you work for a manager who expects you to be on call 24/7 and that’s not what you want, then you need to discuss reasonable hours.

If you’re not working for a company that understands work life balance is a priority and you work in the legal, finance or HR sectors, let The Eventus Recruitment Group work with you to help you find your next position. We work with many organisations and firms that ensure they understand their staff’s priorities in terms of a work life balance and can support you in your aspirations of flexible working. We can help you choose the right people to work for so you can find a great balance in team work and living a balanced life.
