Reviewing a recent series is what this blog post could turn in to however it has its purpose.

Recently just finished watching the first series of an Irish Production called “Striking Out”.

The series sees well known Amy Huberman acting as Tara Rafferty an accidental family lawyer working out of a pop up law firm on the quays in Dublin.

The series is a contrast between her previous role and current.  She was working for a major city centre player with out of this world offices, perks, benefits, shares and married to the owners son in contrast to her current position of setting up on her own and working out of a warehouse type of a building.   The fact is that Tara (Family Solicitor) doesnt need the big fancy office, the cheating husband and the controlling father in law to be an amazing solicitor and win cases as a major underdog.  No she defies the odds and wins her cases with class.  Her experience and her strength as a person carries her over the line quite comfortably and with professional ease.

Sometimes when we look at our options in our careers we need to create glamour around our own role if this is something we desire.

Personally i work from home on average about 3 days per week, i spend the other two days out meeting clients/candidates, ordering hourly cups of tea, waters and light lunches in the comfort of hotel lobbies, mingling unplanned with various business people.  Im not clock watched and i am lucky enough to manage my own day.  Not every business can work in this way but with years of experience, trust and maturity it works exceptionally well for this firm and proves profitable of course.

When looking for a role as a newly qualified or paralegal indeed or any level at that one can be drawn to the shiny new office, the business hubs in the city centres, the in house coffee house and we can be drawn to this naturally, my advice to candidates when looking at new options is to look at a wide variety of firms of all different shapes and sizes and look at where you will be 3 – 5 years from now with those.

Get out, nework, glamour up your role and use your time wisely.

Tara Rafferty enjoys her new life so much more now that she is not under the watch and image of the corporate world… it isnt for everyone!
